Tips for Traveling By Train

by Sharon Miller

  1. Do not pack your valuables in your large baggage as you may have to store these in luggage areas near the doors of the train. Instead, keep all money, valuable, and your passport on your person or secure in a small, zippered bag that you can keep with you at your seat.
  2. Keep your ticket accessible because the conductor will come through checking tickets during the journey.
  3. Stock up on snacks and water prior to departure, not all trains are equipped with food and beverage carts.
  4. Although train rides are an excellent time to catch up sleep, reading, or writing, do not forget to look out the window and enjoy the scenery.

  1. Although most EU countries are part of the Schengen Agreement and it is no longer necessary to present your passport when crossing a border, it is still common for the conductor to take your passport, reservation voucher, and train ticket for overnight trips.
  2. Do not leave valuables in plain sight. It is advisable to sleep with your money and other valuables on your person.
  3. Be sure to keep the door to your berth locked at all times.
  4. Stock up on snacks and water prior to departure.
  5. Make sure your toiletry bag is easily accessible, otherwise, facial wipes and a small bottle of mouthwash can provide an easy way to freshen up.
  6. Bring a small pack of facial tissue, just in case.
